You know, lemmy world has the largest population, so it’s really obvious when things are getting blocked. I finally did a search today on their side. Only one or 2 per day are coming through. I suspected that they regulated their content, but why not just block me? So weird.

When trying to convince people to move to Fediverse services, people will often refer to them as “alternatives”, calling Mastodon a Twitter-alternative, PeerTube a YouTube-alternative, etc. But I don’t think this is the most effective approach.

This past June, I put together a write-up about two major approaches to backfilling conversations. The ability to properly backfill conversations means we will be able to make major inroads toward solving the feeling that the fediverse is quiet.
Decentralized social network Mastodon says it can’t comply with Mississippi’s age verification law — the same law that saw rival Bluesky pull out of the state — because it doesn’t have the means to do so.
What I'm imagining is that someone running a project (like a game studio for example) creates an instance of PieFed or Lemmy or whatever, disables sign-ups, creates community(-ies) for their project(s), and lets people post there.
While I don't currently play online multiplayer games, I have been following the "Stop Killing Games" campaign, and of course noticed that the main reason that publishers can render games unplayable is centralization.
As you've probably seen or heard Dropsitenews has published a list (from a Meta whistleblower) of "the roughly 100,000 top websites and content delivery network addresses scraped to train Meta's proprietary AI models" -- including quite a few fedi sites. Meta denies everything of course, but they routinely lie through their teeth so who knows. In any case, whether the specific details in the report are accurate, it's certainly a threat worth thinking about.
I was thinking about account portability. While I haven't had to migrate instances myself, it does seem like it would be highly inconvenient. How do you let people know it's the same account?
