Explanation: In antiquity, Greek city-states had an immense sense of civic pride - and rivalry with other city-states. Despite widely recognizing each other as fellow Greeks, nearby Greek city-states were ENEMY TEAM, and had to be opposed! From matters as important as war, to as petty (and recognizably so) as sports. While political ideology could enter into it, and nearby states could also conflict over legitimate resources, much of the time it genuinely was just team sports/gang nonsense. Hope you’re wearing the right team colors in this neighborhood!

Sports were serious city-rivalry business too - a star athlete who ‘defected’ from one city to another could look forward to their name being fucking mud in their original city-state, and being raucously celebrated in their new one!
That pretty much still happens in any city with two sports teams.
Tribalism at it’s core
