Amelio Robles Ávila, 1913

Context: Amelio Robles Ávila (3 November 1889 – 9 December 1984) was a colonel during the Mexican Revolution. Assigned female at birth, Robles lived openly as a man from age 24 until his death at age 95.

Robles joined the army sometime around 1911, and a few years later started to dress as their gender and demanded to be treated as a man. From 1913 to 1918 Robles fought under Zapatistas as “el coronel Robles”, eventually earning his own commannd. After the death of Emiliano Zapata, Robles and 315 me serving under him joined to fight with the Agua Prieta Revolt.

In the 1930s Robles married Ángela Torres, adopted a daughter, before becoming estranged from both later in life. Dying in 1984.
