The AP investigation, in collaboration with Frontline (PBS), detailed how South Korea’s government, Western countries and adoption agencies worked in tandem to send some 200,000 Korean children overseas despite evidence that many were procured through questionable or unscrupulous means.

Western nations largely ignored the abuses and sometimes pressured South Korea to maintain the supply to meet their high demand for babies

And for a nation with a shocking fertility rate? Almost feels orchestrated.

Who profits from South Korea’s downfall?

Most of these adoptions happened in the 1970s/80s. I don’t think many are occurring anymore - it’s mostly a lagging thing

My impression is that they had a problem of an economy that could not support the population at that time. Overpopulation vs underpopulation.

Why would this be part of South koreas downfall?

This seems like the exact thing a country would do if they had a declining birth rate and wanted to keep Korean babies in the country vs being adopted out

He’s referring to the idea that they’ve had a very very low birth rate for a while as this has been happening. Both draining it of its future working population.

You have to go til Korea to adopt a child? Are there no “valid” candidates in adopters’ country?
