“You have to read X amount of theory to be a real leftist” always rubbed me the wrong way.
You’re expecting working class people to dedicate dozens if not hundreds of hours of their already finite time and energy to dense texts before they’re allowed to partake in reclaiming their rights.
It’s also arguably ableist since not everyone has the capability to read it all between learning disabilities, conditions that drain energy and bandwidth, and so on.
It also flies in the face of proven effective political strategy. The right doesn’t make everyone read and annotate a copy of Atlas Shrugged before they can claim conservative ideology. They use sound bites and propaganda and calls to action.
The more barriers you put in between a regular person and your cause, the more you’re effectively guaranteeing no progress. Making leftism digestible is key.
the “read more theory” club should just drop their motto to “read more” to encourage a little reading comprehension in their fanbase.
