US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere

Ironic, given that it’s many US companies that block European web visitors because they don’t want to comply with EU privacy rights.
The site will be hosted at “freedom.gov,” the sources said
So… they will just ban that too then, what a waste of time and money lol
Nope, the EU is all in favor of free speech, this site won’t be banned, US Americans can publish any brainfarts they want. Don’t fall for trump’s propaganda. (Within Europe, hate speech can lead to legal repercussions, laws do not allow eg the harassment of children, women, minorities, politicians, or (very limited and well defined) attacks against our constitutions or democracy; that’s where freedom of speech may, in extreme cases, end).
If the site is meant to be a mechanism to circumvent policy with no other use case, it will probably get banned.
Thats not “free speech”, and free speech us only a protected right up until it starts to impact other human rights.
People seem to forget that free speech is not the only protected right, and that in most countries its definitely not #1 on the priority list, usually several other rights come before it.
My guess is that this is a propaganda effort meant to counter that EU countries is putting pressure on social media to moderate hate speech and importantly disinformation.
Having an official US government site means both that it will have higher apparent legitimacy (compared to a random X post) for people who want to believe. It’ll likely also mean that there is no European corporate presence to pressure so the only option would be to escalate to blocking the entire site, which I don’t see happening tbh.
The article said Germany removed 14k things from social media. Many of which were to protect Israel I’m sure. There are no good guys here.
Which 14k things? That’s pretty obscure. Don’t fall for trumps propaganda; like in the USA (and many many other countries) hamas is a labeled a terrorist organization, and like in the USA, anti-semitism isnt allowed in most EU countries. Hate speech against minorities is actively removed, but if I open my front door and shout : the Israel government is killing Palestinians, nobody on Germany or the eu will prosecute me. Again, dont fall for trumps narrative, he’s a liar.
It’s in the linked article.
And Germany’s laws are well known to be twisted to go after Israel protesters on bad faith as you should be well aware. Their system is shamelessly corrupted for the worst people in the world. And that’s not a new thing either, from the Shah to now, Germany has suffered from bad politicians, and they are about to throw the entire republic to a far right by sucking so much worse every cycle, and that far right wing in league with the US and Russia will try and fix elections just as those countries are doing or planning on doing.
It’s a pity, you have locked yourself into a USA/Trump‘ narrative. Just come to Germany. I protest for Palestine, completely freely. Don’t fall for superficial propaganda it doesn’t pay off
Trump’s VPN is unlikely to help promote the Palestinian people’s rights.
The person I was responding to made a statement that Europe doesn’t violate free speech and only regulates hate speech, and I was pointing out that is bullshit, and the article says it was bullshit.
I definitely wouldn’t trust the administration’s vpn no, they are the enemy, for all of the faults of ze Germans and assorted europeans, the administration is the fucking devil.
Which kind of content? I live in Europe and I’m constantly encountering racist, sexist or violent content. What else could they offer?
Outright Nazi propaganda for the poor Europeans who haven’t yet understood the supremacy of the white race. And injected ads for Trump-branded scams.
Let’s be clear, Trump is a sociopathic pedphile, no doubt about it and anything coming out of his administration and himself is a grift.
The dude wants to “Make America Great Again” ( I lol each time i say this as it sounds like a toddler playing with his toys) by destroying everything else around it. He said as much and he hates EU, because they are making fun of him and treating him accordingly: like a bully with no balls.
I would rather suport EU censorship than allow trash like X-Twitter to only spread lies and disinformation, like it currently does, under the rule of a technoNazi.
As a European, that first paragraph is wild:
The U.S. State Department is developing an online portal that will enable people in Europe and elsewhere to see content banned by their governments including alleged hate speech and terrorist propaganda, a move Washington views as a way to counter censorship, three sources familiar with the plan said.
I mean, I get what they’re trying to say here, but the author’s opinion does shine through a teeny tiny bit.
A perfect example of why sovereignty is impossible when you can’t control your information space.
One source said officials had discussed including a virtual private network function to make a user’s traffic appear to originate in the U.S. and added that user activity on the site will not be tracked.
Somehow I don’t believe that last part 🤔
The United States already funds the Tor Project, but despite this looking similar at first blush, it’s far more centralized and thus easier to surveil anybody who uses it.
Portal team includes former DOGE member Coristine
Aka Edward Coristine, aka “Big Balls”, aka the guy who helped compromise your social security number, aka the reason the US put stormtroopers into DC.
In a world with tightly regulated Internet this might start making sense. Tor and its traffic won’t make it through AI-assisted censorship systems like China’s GFW and Russia’s whatever-it’s-called-but-they’ve-started-breaking-everything-here. While a portal managed by foreign superpower’s government might be allowed simply because of diplomatic pressure.
Not too different from how radio became regulated all over the world.
It’s a shame, but what can you do. We are not demiurges, we are grains of sand flying with the wind and floating with the current. Sometimes we get melted, sometimes split, sometimes wet, cold, hot.
I’m not ashamed of dreaming of a different future and arguing in favor of it many years ago. But I’m also not ashamed to admit I was likely wrong.
I’m not sure I follow your logic. If countries are getting more authoritarian and nationalistic, and China is already blocking Tor, why would they feel compelled to not block something that even more blatantly a nationalistic American project?
Because it’s all trade and balance, so it’s probable that such a window into the world (which will have its own censorship) might be allowed. Probably throttled. Probably allowed and throttled depending on some kind of social rating and individual permissions.
Unlike Tor, it’s not escaping censorship, it’s one portal (it’s in the name) somehow allowing access to a few select “free speech” (quotes mandatory no matter how you feel about actual free speech) directions.
USSR had tourist permissions and allowed directions, and friendly socialist countries for which it was easier to get such a permission, and unfriendly capitalist countries for which it was pretty rare and involved state security following you, and so on.
This might be similar.
If you don’t see how something can be divided into levels of access for different citizens, then that’s just lack of imagination. They will think of a way.
I’m aware of authoritarian regimes that block internet based on the class of people that are accessing it, thanks. China already does this.
But I don’t see how you’re drawing the conclusion that this portal is going to be the vessel for doing that. Seems too 1984esque even for Trump, and like it would require actual competence.
Seems too 1984esque even for Trump, and like it would require actual competence.
Not that much competence. Mostly power to keep applying it.
If they’d decided to use truth.gov as the domain, that would have been the cherry on top. 😄
A ludicrous “plan”.
Cool, gotta get that Nazi propaganda into the countries smart enough to ban that shit, wouldn’t want people to think there was any sense left in the white house.
Can they first make an online portal to bypass the shitty loginwalls imposed by their own companies please?

Is the only purpose of the project creating a gov site that foreign governments will have to potentially block? Alternatively, it’s just a silly idea that people with power and little knowledge are able to realize.
