Cautiously optimistic for this one given how involved Brandon is involved with adaptations. although Apple has been hit and miss with theirs.
I haven’t seen every adaptation Apple has done, but Silo is phenomenal. And every show on Apple TV I’ve watched has been excellent. Also, Sanderson having creative control can only be good news.
Happy its Apple TV, their stuff is typically really good from what I’ve seen. Wheel of time made me not even want a live action, but I’m hopeful now
Still pissed about that.
Bad enough that ASoIaF got the drop on it, when WoT did get its shot they made a mess of it.
Anyway, maybe that clears the way for an animated WoT.
Oh God, oh Lord no, I’ve been through this too many times. Please don’t let another of my favorite book series be ruined.
Not a chance. Sanderson has full creative control and approval. This is excellent news.
He had specifically said Hollywood didn’t know what to do with him, because after being so wildly successful he didn’t need their money, and he wanted creative control. Most authors give that up when they sell rights.
And Apple TV has been killing it lately, IMO.
This is promising. The only problem is it might mean we get fewer books per year.
If he’s successful, it might open the door for other authors to push meddling producers out of the way with better, more faithful adaptations. The First Law Trilogy, Powder Mage series, or even Lightbringer would be nice to see done right on screen.
most of what happened to book-show adaptation is always the meddling of the executives of the companies. the horrid 8 episode per 1-2 year series doesnt do most show justice.
Man, Mistborn could be so badass as a movie if done right. I know that means something different to everyone but I can’t imagine Sanderson allowing it to be terrible. Even a mediocre adaptation would be fun.
I had hoped they would have gone down the animation route with something like fortiche / castlevania / vox machina, but I think Sanderson is absolutely set on live action.
Either way, Sanderson retaining so much control is very promising. The guy is also so passionate I would like to think we wouldn’t see anything if it wasn’t quality.
The battle sequences in misborn always felt very anime to me, it’d look goofy in live action but awesome animated
Brando himself told us about it on the mistborn sub:

Update From Brandon
Hey, all! News has broken. Rather than post on all the threads, I figured I would do a new post here with some info and thoughts.
In May I flew to Hollywood to start looking for a new partner on the Cosmere. This is something I’ve done before, but this time it was different. I’d been off the market for many years, working with Epic and my friends there.
That means this was my first time being in Hollywood with my Cosmere rights since…oh, 2016?
This time, I got to meet the real decision makers. Not just producers or low level executives. And this led to some really tough choices. I got the red carpet treatment, and liked everyone I met.
The decision to pick Apple was due to two factors. First, the level of approvals and control. Apple wants to be a true partner with me, and they feel like they really get what I want to do. Second, their track record. Apple does fewer things, but with higher quality, than some other studios. I find virtually every thing of theirs I watch is excellent and creator driven.
Join me for a livestream on Friday, probably 6pm mountain. I’ll talk more then. But I will be writing the Mistborn screenplay myself over the next 5 months, as my full time work. Goal is for a theatrical Mistborn, then Stormlight show after. Focus on doing it carefully and right.
I promise not to get too distracted to do books. However, if I want this done right, I need to give some real attention and heart to it now.

I’m so excited. Apple has a pretty good track record of producing quality shows and movies.
I like that they have the rights for all of the Cosmere and didn’t just auction off Mistborn or Stormlight in pieces. Having a universe of shows/movies (like when Marvel was in its prime) might be what they’re hoping for with this sort of decision.
I’m so afraid, please be good
I always just assume any adaptation will be less than average, then if it’s better it’s a bonus for something I’ve enjoyed reading (listening to in this case for me) and just accept it as is. If worse well I didn’t expect much.
These days I mostly hope they don’t change characters too drastically if not then it’s noticably better (most times). Or at least not give off certain bits to other characters or pass them uplooks at Dune, Paul needed to cry
I’ve heard of him from his contributions to Wheel of Time but I don’t think I’ve read any of his other stuff. He sounds quite prolific given this “universe” seems to encompas multiple series of books.
I enjoy his books quite a bit. Like the other poster mentioned he develops great systems of magic. Stormlight Archives is his centerpiece for the cosmere universe which is now 1/2 complete at 5 books published.
Emperor’s soul is a short story that really does of his unique take on magic systems.
As an author he’s well known for his magic systems he creates. I haven’t read all of his different worlds but that’s what I’ve learned his thing is. Not sure about the rest of his world building but apparently the systems he creates are well received by most
That’ll probably be the first thing to go
You’re not wrong. In fact, most of his ideas on how to get magic are really, really dangerous for kids.
One gives you magic from swallowing pennies. One might give you magic if you got really sad and tried to jump in front of a train to save a puppy. One of them explicitly gives you magic for catching diseases.
Its honestly a terrible idea to try to adapt any of this to a wide audience.
I’ve only really read his Mistborn novels but I loved them. I’ve been meaning to read more of his stuff, so this is exciting news.
I’m conflicted. I fucking love Sanderson and fucking hate Apple in equal amounts……
I bit the bullet and got one month of Apple+ to binge Severence and watch Tetris. Only money I’ve ever given the company but those were worth it. I’ll probably do the same for Cosmere and watch Pluribus too.
Pirate that shit, don’t give them fucking money!
Pick up murderbot while you’re at it, it’s excellent
Its a lot easier when you fucking hate them both lmao
I was a huge fan for a long time. Took his “secret project” series to open my eyes. Guy launched a whole campaign around the idea that he would help improve the working conditions and pay of voice actors and authors alike. He raised $43 million dollars for 4 books and some merch with the promise that none of these books would be on Amazon until things changed at audible and kindle.
Can you guess what happened? He got his check and not even a month later he’s slinging all the books and audiobooks on Amazon. Of course. Mr.Mormon gotta tithe, after all. He can write all the gay and transgender superheroes he wants, so long as his money supports conversion therapy and polygamy.
Hmmm I dont actually know anything about the guy himself so this is all news to me, I generally consume books knowing nothing about the author behind them at all.
Thanks for the info though, I’m gonna look into this more, at least I have never paid him any money for the books!
I feel like Apple is the place for it. I can’t wait. I wonder if they will eventually bring it all together.
After the mess they made of WoT, I’m surprised he let them near it.
That was Amazon, not Apple TV.
You are correct. I was misremembering which of them was responsible for destroying my favorite books. Apple fucked Foundation, Amazon fucked WoT.
Foundation is oddly quite good, even if not faithful. Carried by the made-up Cleon arc.
Lee Pace baby
Adding in, Amazon certainly didn’t drop the ball with Fallout
I swear apple shows are picked based off what books the executives are reading or have read
Are any of the Cosmere series finished and ready for an adaptation? Or are we looking at a Game of Thrones situation here?
Mistborn era 1 and 2 are ready to go. Stormlight Archive is close to wrapping up its first big story arc with its 5th book coming soon. Elantris, Warbreaker, Arcanum Unbound, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, Tress and the Emerald Sea, and Isles of the Emberdark would make a good miniseries each. He has plenty of material to adapt and they all range from good to outstanding.
Stormlight book 5 has been out for a while now.
Oh you’re right I forgot that fact and already read it! Sanderson is a writing machine.
Book 5 of stormlight archives came out in 2024.
Brandon Sanderson had an assembly line of readers and editors to help him keep pushing out content at a ridiculous pace. I would not compare him to GRRM.
Also he treats writing as a job. I respect the hell out of his output and his willingness to explain how he does it (outline then 3 drafts, with a daily schedule that includes a few hours of writing on weekdays)
