It's not just new series, the subtitles have been ridiculously bad for around a year in my estimation. There have been 'AI' tools for machine transcription for at least half a decade now, and the errors in Crunchyroll subtitles are consistent with my experience of using machine transcription tools in my work. It's insultingly bad.

OMG! My daughter and I just watched this today and were like, "WTF is with these subtitles‽ They're awful!"

It looks like they didn't even use ChatGPT properly... Like they only fed in one sentence at a time instead of whole scenes, resulting in lost context and thus, bad translation.

I runsubtitles on dubbed anime because both my sight and hearing are older person level and it is funny how crazy bad the subtitles can be. Not even consistent with like name which suggests its doing like voice to text on the dub (sorry its more obviously this because the inconsistent subtitles will often sorta rhyme with the name or such).

Comments below article are doubtful about the use of automatic translation because they said AI wouldn't make those grammatical errors.
More interesting one commenter said translation has not been done by CrunchyRoll. Sadly there is no source info about this comment to fact check it. I quote :

CR isn't blameless but this reporting is simply not accurate. In this case the subtitles were provided to CR by the Japanese licenser, Cygames JP. CR's issue is in going ahead with the stream despite the low quality of the product, not producing AI subs themselves.
