Shows that were filmed in front of a live studio audience needed a laugh track to even out the sound of audience laughter. It would sound much worse to hear it unedited.
Besides, they only sound bad nowadays because we're not used to them anymore. After a few episodes of most shows, they fade into the background and you don't notice them until you watch The Big Bang Theory and you hear laughter during an episode that contains no jokes.
