Explanation: The Janissary Corps were a unit of slave soldiers in the Ottoman Empire. They were renowned, initially, for their professionalism and skill, as most military units at the time were temporary groupings or mercenaries.
However, as their importance became more central to the security of the state, and the Janissaries more aware of their position, increasingly the Janissaries became a political force themselves, able to influence or even overthrow Sultans which displeased them.
