But what kind? Shot and powder maybe? Why not carry the little sling flask like thing typical of the US civil war and muskets? That seems easier to handle in a hurry and manage in wet conditions or water crossings.
Self-contained shot of this kind is easier if you need to measure out a precise amount of powder very quickly. Wooden cases of a similar sort were used in 16th and 17th century Western Europe, called โapostlesโ (because a soldier would usually carry 12 of them).
In the US Civil War, paper cartridges were more widespread than powder flasks.
