Explanation: The Greek warlord Pyrrhus of Epirus was a famous commander of Classical Antiquity. During an assault on the city of Argos, Pyrrhus ended up fighting in the streets of Argos. Urban combat is brutal in just about any era. He, while mounted on his horse, confronted an Argive soldier who was on foot. Unfortunately for Pyrrhus, that soldier’s mother was looking out for him from above - literally! She tossed a heavy tile from the rooftops to defend her boy, striking Pyrrhus on the head, and either killing him outright, or paralyzing him long enough for the soldier to kill him. Thus ended the career of one of the most renowned conquerors of the age!
Don’t mess with ma!
For those who are making the connection with the term from his name, yes, it’s from a previous particularly hard-fought battle by Pyrrhus that we get the term ‘Pyrrhic Victory’, meaning a victory not worth the price.
