This is a short development update on our progress towards the first release candidate for GIMP 3.0. We recently reached the string freeze milestone. What this means is that there will be no more changes in user-facing text (like GUI labels and messages) so that translators can work on the final translations for the 3.0 release.

I hope Gimp 3.0 stable will happen before the heat-death of the universe.

we’re currently at 96% completion for the 3.0 RC1 milestone, with 11 issues remaining.

for how long it has been in development, neither 96% nor 11 issues remaining give me confidence in short-term completion.

But given the wording around it, I guess it has to be not too far off - whatever that means. I'm not hopeful about anything, but looking forward to it. GIMP has been my main "heavy" image editing tool for a long time.

All features aside, I hope it will launch faster than previous versions.

Ive noticed that for some reason it launches in 1-2 seconds on Linux Mint as opposed to like 10 on Windows for some reason. Seems weird, since based on the status messages it seems like the rate limiting step is opening a bunch of Python modules, which *shouldn't* be drastically different between OSes??

My interpretation has always been that it loads [too] many files. File performance on many [small] files is noticeably, significantly slower on Windows than it is on Linux.

Huh I did not realize that. Is that an NTFS vs. EXT4 thing?

It's still not full CMYK. Only import and export gets true CMYK support, and editing is still RGB (but with CMYK print preview). They said full support is planned for the future, as they have too much to worry about at the moment. With 3.0 they lay the ground for future features.

What does full CMYK allow you to do that RGB editing doesn't? (Genuinly curious)

I am not a CMYK user, so this is just an assumption. The tools are RGB related and not CMYK. In example I can setup a softproof view of the image and see the colors how it would look like in CMYK. Then select the brush tool, choose color blue 0000ff and when painting it looks nothing alike, because it is interpreted as a different color to view; much more muted and almost purple. But its still blue in the background and all filters and tools will interpret it as RGB blue when making calculations. The channels of the image is still RGB instead CMYK. There is always this guesswork and interpretation involved, which would probably be not there if there was full native CMYK support.

Edit: Tools and filters in example have sliders for RGB colors, but not CMYK. You still need to think in RGB and you have to think how it converts to CMYK at the same time. Not ideal for people who are used to native CMYK editing in other tools.

*Full interface overhaul? Maybe . . . ? 🙏*

Exciting stuff!

I'm particularly happy to hear about the progress toward saving in multiple sizes at once.

I’d really love if somebody would give GIMP the Blender treatment. It’s very good software but some of the UI paradigms are quite outdated. All their floating windows and dialogs do not work well on multiple screens.

From the update:

One area we want to focus on after 3.0 is improving our UI/UX design process. We have set up a separate UX repository to report and discuss issues related to design. We are looking to build a team of designers to discuss and create design improvements to GIMP that also respect existing user’s workflows. Denis Rangelov has taken a strong interest in this area and has already done great work in identifying, categorizing, and moving design issues from the code repository to the dedicated design section. Some design improvements have already been implemented for 3.0, and we look forward to working with community designers to give people a better experience!

It'll take some time, but it seems like improvments may be coming.

That's pretty neat. I do hope they do some solid UI/UX research on it, and figure out their own way of smoothing things out without simply "making it like Photoshop" like the grouchy masses are clamoring for. :p

Blender had some odd ideas at first, but I really appreciate their unique approach that, IMHO, makes an Autodesk product feel heavy and kludgy by comparison.

respect existing workflows

Please don't. Existing workflows in the tough spots are 100% workarounds.

Having a hotkey for the zoom tool is a workaround for not being able to scroll the mouse wheel without holding a key down or changing settings.

It's already been done

https://github.com/Diolinux/PhotoGIMP

I was already aware of this fork. I haven't tried it, but does it really fix most of the UX issues of GIMP?

i’m a photoshop simp who straight up couldn’t use GIMP because of the clunky UI, but after switching to linux i’m an avid photogimp advocate.

Ohhh great. Their UI always seemed old and crappy.

Windows -> Single Window Mode

I use single window mode but it still does not stop modal dialogs from popping up in the stupidest places on my dual monitor setup.

FreeCAD just got folders. I can finally organize my models. GIMP's version of this would be multi-select layers.

It's ugly for sure, but I think the biggest barrier to entry is the shortcut keys. Blender's Industry Standard mode makes it a lot easier for Maya users to switch. Something similar for Photoshop users would kill.

GIMPshop used to exist for that purpose.

https://graphite.rs looks like it might replace gimp at some point

Looks like they'll be more in Krita's waters, if anything. And Krita already has a solid UI.

Maybe? It looks like it’s tuned towards generative use cases. Sometimes you need to just edit a photo really quickly and setting up a bunch of nondestructive nodes seems like more of a hassle than help.

But hopefully I’m wrong! This is the first I’ve heard of the project.

Graphite.rs is node-based.

It's entirely different workflow.

No it isnt, i used it and while there is that, you can totally ignore it

This actually seems pretty great alternative to PS, thanks for the tip!

Oh man, I’m SO EXCITED for GIMP 3. I’ve been wanting these features in GIMP for literally decades.

Beautiful work .... I really don't mind the long wait between releases ... the previous Gimp 2.0 versions were so robust and practical that they have lasted for close to 20 years

In the early 2000s, I started off with cracked version of photoshop before I discovered GIMP and as soon as I did, I stuck with them since. They've saved me several thousand dollars in software costs over the past 20 years that I really don't mind waiting for the latest major release.

They can take their time releasing 3.0 for all I care. I'm still using 2.10 and I probably will for the next long while until 3.0 becomes stable. They've done a mountainous amount of work already and I congratulate them on everything.

This makes me realize too that I should probably donate something to their community for all the money they've saved me over the years.

I never thought I'd witness the release of 3.0 in my lifetime

You might still not. Make sure to look both ways when crossing the road.

Is this a threat?

fyi at least in the US you are only legally allowed to make death threats (or carry them out for that matter) if you are actively driving a motor vehicle at the time, please for your own safety if you are going to murder someone or threaten to murder them, do it behind the wheel of a motor vehicle or you could end up in serious trouble with the law!

I've been binging the Final Destination movies, this is coming p close.

Yet Han is still alive in Fast and Furious 9.

Yeah, cars suck.

Careful. You might get hit by a bus.

Hold your horses. An RC is not a release. I don't trust it.

The third one is almost impossible. Ask Valve.

damn I have been using this damn program for... decades?

I have been yelling at it in frustration for equally as long... but seriously in terms of raw, no bullshit, consistent utility to people, GIMP deserves an immense amount of credit.

obviously looking forward to the non destructive editing updates and darktable integration sounds really nice, big fan of darktable.

darktable kicks ass and I say that as someone who hates editing photos almost as much as I like taking them!

Ugh I can't wrap my mind around how weird and unintuitive GIMP feels to use

longstanding critics of the UI/UX will be pleased to hear that GIMP are setting up a UX repository and are looking to build a dedicated team of designers to develop this

Thanks.

In the meanwhile I discovered PhotoGIMP, which helps with getting basic stuff done through GIMP and addresses some points around image and layer selection and manipulation that used to be so confusing with GIMP.

Someone else needs to take over gimp.

Offering your services to maintain a fork?

that is the typical gnome response yeah. " don't like it? do it yourself but we sure won't merge it"

It's cool we can hop to COSMIC DE soon

5/6 of MRs get merged...

MRs from who? Because in my experience it often feels like a closed club in gnome land.

I've had experience trying to contribute to evince the gnome PDF viewer. It was so frustrating and I was immediately and repeatedly confronted with negativity and distrust that I quit. That was the only time I did that after making a serious effort.

If you scare away anyone else it's no wonder that it seems like there is no problem.

Gnome is a very large project with hundreds of different developers and maintainers. I can't speak to your experience but you should avoid generalizing like that, also filing a complaint is always an option; there's a few people over the years that have been kicked out.

Yea I think there is a misunderstanding. My first question was not rhetorical. I was just expressing that my personal experience matches the one described above.

With that both statements could have some truth: 5/6 MRs could be merged and it could still be that they dislike external contributions.

I will not file a complaint or anything like that. It was not that I was insulted nor assaulted just they gave me the vibe that external contribution was not very welcome. While frustrating that is ok, even if it could've been better communicated. Also it was like 4 years ago.

No, just using better software.

Why do you say that?

Yeah, I'm wondering as well.

Is their UX still a nightmare even after 20 years of complaints?

Did a quick google and it doesn't look like 3.0 is gonna be unfucking that, so maybe that

Their UX hasn’t changed a whole lot in 3.0, but they have that work in their road map, so it’s not like they don’t care.
