It's funny how I've learned I hate ads more than I want to watch the content I'm sometimes and I end up just instantly closing the video if an ad starts.
But that of course is only if I screw up and I'm not using ad blockers.
rammerI have witnessed this behaviour. A person opened a video in the Android YouTube app and immediately closed it when an ad started playing. Then opened the same video again, closed it, because ads. Opened it a third time and then let it play without ads.
SabataI'll do this if a website has an inconvenient pop up asking for email, or the cookie consent popup is too big to ignore. I just don't bother going back. I'm not sicking around to navigate around dark pattern bullshit like that.

Well the only thing you would get from a Syrian VPN server is no ads on Meta - YouTube and a few other apps , otherwise you'd need a VPN for the VPN to use things that aren't available here .... like: indeed (jobs) , Netflix , Gitlab , linktree , Google play (mostly works but sometimes need a VPN ) and other things I can't remember

But, yes I agree Youtube mobile app is inefficient and reloads losing my place. Unfortunately, I have the same issue with grayjay making even that one a non-starter.

I'm going to be sad when YouTube dies, and all that collective knowledge and content either goes poof or is haphazardly, incompletely transferred to some "new thing", whenever that is -- but I won't be *that* sad.
I started using YTDLP to download the shows I care about and have them saved offline.
I used to watch a show that got taken down. The show came back online few months later with heavy modifications to remove any potential DMCA footage from it.

Anything longer than 30 seconds, even 31 seconds was an instant skip. Now that the countdown timer is gone, I assume every ad is longer and skip all of them.
katy ✨The website interface on mobile works well enough and on mobile Firefox you can install ublock origin. Made me uninstall a bunch of apps and use their web version instead.
Is there a good way to watch YouTube on iPads ?
On PC and Android my preferred way is Firefox+uBlock (NewPipe sometimes and Smart Tube every day !)
We got an iPad recently and I found out the hard way that Firefox doesn't support add-ons :(
Yes! uYouPlus is amazing although it can be a pain to install because of Apple's shenanigans. It's a collection of patches over the official YouTube app

It's a shame... iPad seems like a very practical device for web browsing and media consumption. But browsing the web in 2024 without an Ad Blocker, tracker blocker, cookie banner auto reject all, is just impossible, at least for me 😅
I think the new EU regulations are forcing Apple to open this and allow to have real different browsers on iOS devices. But not sure if that is the case in the ios 18 or it will only be comming.

try sponsorblock or uBlock. Or some other third party apps. I've decided the inconvenience of watching youtube in a browser (with addons) outweighs the inconvenience of watching several long ads. At least for me.
ReVanced I like better for Mobile, it's the app but with sponsor block and ublock built in.
How does it compare to Newpipe?
ReVanced, in conjunction with MicroG, allows youto be logged in to Google while still having an ad block and sponsor block on mobile. Also setting up might be a little more difficult since it needs you to patch a YouTube apk yourself.
I understands this might be the exact opposite of what some people want but it works for me.

Maybe you have downloaded the wrong APK, there are some bad actors providing "pre built YouTube Revanced APKs". Be sure to only download the Revanced Manager from https://revanced.app/ and the unpatched YT APK (version should match the recommended one in the manager) from a trusted source like apkpure etc.
Does it actually? Genuinely want to know. I've been using Revanced since vanced stopped working and haven't seen a single ad but maybe that's because of other things I'm doing with my phone
I have no idea what that person meant. The only thing that Revanced "injects" are info and updates of the app. The only thing I can think of is if they've installed it from a sketchy unofficial source.

It's the original YouTube app but with addons. Revanced actually uses Newpipe to offer downloads. Biggest difference is that you can log in with your YouTube account on Revanced.
I did use to use Vanced but stuck with Newpipe as it was lighter (not tried Revanced as I switched before the shutdown).
And SmartTube on the TV.

I use playlet on roku which uses invidious, but I recommend setting up your own invidious instance since YouTube has been cracking down on the public instances.
Yattee on iOS works sometimes depending on whether or not YouTube has blocked an instance, but you could also try setting up your own local invidious instance to hook into it as a more permanent solution, though that was too much for me to figure out how to set up correctly.

You're right. it's uBlock or some other addition that removes the pre-roll ads. But googling for Sponsorblock is a good start to find such apps. I even got some patched youtube app for my TV... So it's no ads for me and not even sponsored segments. Not on the computer, not on my phone and neither on the TV.

Showed a friend how I got a modified version of Youtube on my phone. He did it, and when it came time to re-certify the app (7 days for none paid developers) he couldn't be bothered to plug his phone in, and let the program (that automatically recertifies it mind you) do it's thing.
He was showing me a video on the new DBZ Sparking Zero game, and had two whole ads before being able to show me whatever it was he was going to show me. I mentioned, "Man. If only there was a way to prevent this kind of nuisance.." and gave him such a withering look, he just put the phone away and said nevermind.
It is actually fucking insane what people are willing to put up with man....
This is a lesson I teach people at my job. It's called "people are people". The basic jist is that YOU this *this* way, and someone else, who isn't you, thinks *this other* way. The things you find important in life, may not be a priority for others.
Personally, I place a great importance in staying current with events about companies or politicians trying to take away freedoms, or invade their privacy for the sake of making a profit.
However, my sister is like "oh yeah! Let me just do this 23andme test!". When I explained what she had just done, she didn't care. When I explained to my mom that her putting my info into facebook invades my privacy against my consent, she didn't care. They both think I'm over reacting. They think it's some silly conspiracy theory that companies would use data of peoples personal info for profit.
They don't think like I do. Whatever your most basic common sense fundamental beliefs are, there are people, probably in your life, who don't give a shit about those things.
People are people.
There is no one definition of what a person is. There are currently something like 7-8 billion definitions of what a person is. And it's always changing. Some die off, others are born. Each individually self defined. And those definitions can change over time. My sister in her 20s was a party animal. Out till 3am. Every weekend. Not doing drugs, but certainly drinking.
Now she's in her 50s with a 13 year old daughter, and suddenly the world is full of scary people! She's in bed by 9pm, sometimes earlier. No partying. Maybe a midevening attendance of a play, with a glass of wine....but certainly not at a club partying till 3am! Her definition of who she is, and her self definition has changed since the 90s. That's what people do.
There will be people similar minded to you. There will be others who aren't. You can disagree with the similar minded people on certain topics, and find common ground on other topics with the people you thought you were nothing like.
People are people.

That doesn't mean that we can't at least try to show people or teach them things that they didn't have any knowledge of prior.
All my life I have been self taught. Never had like-minded people, unfortunately. I just try to be the "older sibling" to this man, because he is where I was in life. No one took time to show him things, called him stupid, etc. He's come a very long way, and now goes and does his own tinkering. If I just let him be, he says he wouldn't have grown like he has.
Sometimes people need guidance, and that's all I strive to provide. What he does after the guidance is 100% people are people.
People on the opposite side of that tolerance spectrum look at us avid ad avoiders like we put in too much effort to do that, so I see it as two sides of the same coin. I started blocking/avoiding ads due to the nuisance, long before privacy and security became even more prevalent attack vectors through advertising. That was just a benefit to the time saved by blocking ads, but not it's a primary use case.
A couple of ads isn't the end of the world for most people. Whilst I understand that they are undersirable, I also want the creators I enjoy to be able to get paid.
Some of the creators I enjoy are quite niche and they put their time, effort and money in to making the content. I don't think a couple of ads is too much to ask to help pay them back.

Yeah, the YTers I follow all are now using internally sourced ads where they get the money. While I will never use or want Hello Fresh or Manscape, I at least know the monies paid for those placements are going directly to the YTer I'm watching.
The downsides is that you need to be a fairly popular YTer to get such funds. Which is creating a high bar for new creators to start up.
A quick Google says you're wrong, I'm not an accountant for YouTube so I couldn't prove otherwise. Presumably if there was zero benefit to creators, they would all turn the adverts off, rather than just some of them.
I'm aware that they only get a small percentage of the ad revenue but it's like that in every business unfortunately. When I buy a loaf of bread at the supermarket, I know that only a tiny fraction of a percent the price will go in to the checkout worker's or farmer's, or the baker's paycheck, but I'm not going to boycott supermarkets because of that.

The article you shared said that it's only creators not in the YPP that don't receive revenue but you either didn't read it or just decided to omit that information based upon your predetermined conclusion.

That’s actually interesting if true… considering they still have to stream us video, Pay the bandwidth and all but don’t generate any revenue. Makes me almost want to Let the whole ad play but skip it at then last second so it only costs them money.
Grayjay is such a good app to watch not only adfree YouTube, but also twitch, rumble, Odysee, etc. I don't understand how this app isn't the standard.
The second it becomes the standard is the second google looks for ways of nerfing it.
Grayjay is ran locally, so they cant block the datacenter traffic like they did with invidious, but even if they managed to do something I'd probably still use grayjay, since I can follow the same creators on all platforms with it.
They can target the code though. They'll inspect the code, find ways to break it, and then kill it that way.
The sooner we can get creators off of YouTube the better.

No it's not, it hides the skip countdown, once skipping is an option, the button is there. The scrubber shows the length of the unskippable portion of the ad instead of the length of the full ad, so it's a different kind of deception, but the button is still there when it's usable.
