Without subsidies, coal will stick around for steel making. There are alternatives, but they're expensive to implement. Nobody will do it without governments footing the bill or forcing the issue.

Coal power will also stick around longer without government subsidies and rules. The base economics are trending towards wind/water/solar, but that won't happen fast enough on its own.
