The first commit to the git repository was this day in 2023.

After a couple days of discussions about the newly implemented vote quota, I’m kinda exhausted. It seems like a situation we won’t ever agree on. Me personally, I don’t want to argue like this over a piece of software that I have high regards for. It tears us apart, where we should work together.

If you’ve been playing with PieFed’s new Follow functionality at all you’ll notice that it’s a bit limited. Yeah you can follow people but you were probably seeing all their posts already anyway - the threadiverse is really not very big.

The search isn’t terribly useful for finding new communities, tbh. Lots of results with 0 active users. Is there a community here dedicated to helping people find other communities?

In Admin->Moderation (/admin/reports) I see a bunch of reports. I open one and I see that the object of report has been already deleted. I think in such case the report should be taken down from the list or grayed out - the latter idea so admin team don’t loose history Or maybe the list should be split in two, like registration does?

Hi. I’ve set up a new single-user instance for myself today and I’m trying to create a local community.

So currently, we have two different closed-off developer chats on Zulip and Matrix. This means, that new devs will be confused about which channel to join and experienced devs have to actively look around in both channels for questions to answer. This seems like a really inefficient system, so we should at least decide on one official communication channel.

As I understand, there are currently no real guidelines for this, even though AI is currently a big topic in FOSS. In my opinion, AI can be quite dangerous for free software and that’s why we really need to discuss how we can address this issue. Here are some of the reasons for that:

In my recent encounter, the mod deleted a reply to a comment. The reply title showed just “[deleted]” but that three-dots-menu still showes the author’s name.

I have received word that there are people combing through the PieFed code looking for anything that might be harmful. This is excellent and can only make PieFed better and less harmful.

Hi ! So, when creating a post with tags on a Piefed instance (feddit.fr), I noticed that the results shown in Mastodon by searching the tags are not always the same: some posts are not shown with an excerpt in Mastodon, when some others do have an excerpt (along with a Read More link). I would like to know how can one ensure that the excerpt appears, because a blank message with only a link is not great to Mastodon viewers, especially when the posts are short fictions.

I’ve made it so that when someone deletes their own post it is still viewable, including the comments. The post author and body will NOT be visible. Deleted posts will not show up in communities, search results, etc just as before - you need the URL of the post to get to it. Bookmark a deleted post within 7 days or it will be deleted for real.

New to PieFed here. From my understanding: topics are a collection of communities, allowing you to see all their posts in one feed, right? In my instance, I can’t create a topic, only if I’m already in one? It feels a little confusing. Any advice?

The 1.4.0 upgrade is now available on the YunoHost appstore and GitHub. All automated tests were successful and the upgrade went smooth on my instance.

I just tested the newest install of piefed on a small family server. Its a bit heavy on the CPU side, but its working!

I got a lot of backlash for a thread on Lemmy the other day about how the “federation” system is fundamentally broken by its lack of Tor support.

I noticed that after editing a post’s alt texts, it doesn’t change. Is it supposed to be that way or is it an oversight?

Rather than a format like piefed.social/post/long_number, posts how have a url that includes the community name and title in it.

Next to list and tiling, how about a videoplayer view?

Some meme or image-based communities will prefer to set this to ‘Image’. Mods can edit the community settings to change it.

On ActivityPub.Space, I started adding links out to various implementors’ development announcements.

I’ve followed all the frequent posters on piefed.social using my mastodon.social account so we should be seeing a lot more PieFed content showing up there now. But unless you use hashtags, I’ll be the only one seeing it!

TL;DR I want Mastodon hashtags treated like communities.

A core part of the Fediverse is decentralisation, ideally we don't just have eg. one bit Privacy community Instead we have a bunch, none with more than ~20% market share, or something along those lines.

Follow-up: Where can I further research how these technicalities work so as to not spam this community further?

A lemmy server's /instance page shows lists of federated and blocked instances, but piefed's version doesn't seem to have this (you see Online | Dormant | Gone forever | Trusted - and I'm not 100% clear on what some of those mean). Is it possible to see a list of servers that my piefed server has defederated/blocked?

Are there any apps that support topics and feeds?

Sometimes I write a comment on a post that is relatively new. Often, in such cases, I am interested in what others comment. Having a checkbox to get notified of other comments (effectively clicking the bell button via the action of commenting) would be handy

Tl;dr: I think we have too much "empty" content and noise here and it drags down the place for 2 years now. Does PieFed include an approach to change the situation?

Since https://piefed.social/f/rpggames seems to be mostly about computer games, I created a bunch of feeds for TTRPG

What features made you choose PieFed over Mbin/Lemmy? What features do they have that you’d like to see in PieFed?

I've created !polls@piefed.social. Normally I would go to the big community promo communities on Lemmy and promote it there. But, since this is a polls community and Lemmy doesn't support polls yet, the community is completely empty when viewed from Lemmy.

I've been considering launching a Lemmy server for a community lately, but am now back exploring piefed with the Lemm.ee shutdown.
