I’ve been watching some One Marc Fifty stuff on YouTube. I can follow him well, and I’m decent at much of the hardware stuff. At least I can compile OpenWRT or do a basic Gentoo install with a custom kernel. I dread staring at NFTables, but can hack around some. I don’t fully understand networking from the abstract fundamentals. Are there any good sources that break down the subject like Ben Eater did with the 8 bit bread board computer, showing all the basic logic, buses, and registers surrounding the Arithmetic Logic Unit? I’m largely looking for a more fundamental perspective on what are the core components of the stack and what elements are limited to niche applications.

I just started setting up a Jellyfin server and am moving all of my old DVD backups off of an ancient NAS that doesn’t play well with modern TVs or Chromecast. Can’t cast half the videos anymore because crhomecast says F you to certain audio and video formats, but jellyfin has zero trouble talking to my TV. It was going so well that I thought I might try to back up some of the aging DVD/BluRays we have laying around because they don’t last forever and I’d hate to lose these titles. I used to use Handbrake/AnyDVD, but it seems AnyDVD is defunct these days… What are people using to back up their personal DVD collections these days? I prefer Windows apps, but I do have a good linux system that I can use to back them up with too, it’s just slower than my Win PC.

I developed an app in Laravel that uses Google authentication, it works perfectly on my localhost. When I deployed it in my nginx server (ubuntu 24.04) I get the Google login correctly and it proceeds to my main page as expected. But after that, no route is accessible. All of them throw me a 404. I’ve been googling it for ages but I can’t for the life of me find the solution for this.

So we’re starting a general contractor company and i I’m wondering if anyone else did that and had general advice? Its with someone else that is not really technology savy.

So, I’m selfhosting immich, the issue is we tend to take a lot of pictures of the same scene/thing to later pick the best, and well, we can have 5~10 photos which are basically duplicates but not quite. Some duplicate finding programs put those images at 95% or more similarity.

I'd like to get to a docker swarm sort of situation where I have 3 identical docker VMs, running 3 identical Caddy configurations, with 3 identical Apache VMs, and requests load balanced across them. And then I want a shared filesystem so the users can upload the files for their web sites to one location, and it's made available to all the web front ends.

I’ve been playing around with self hosting for file sharing, backups, and a handful of other ideas I might one day get round to. I like the idea of a mesh VPN and being able to, for example, connect a travelling laptop to a ‘host’ laptop nearby, though my only public ip is a VPS in another country.

I host a website that uses mTLS for authentication. I created a client cert and installed it in Firefox on Linux, and when I visit the site for the first time, Firefox asks me to choose my cert and then I’m able to visit the site (and every subsequent visit to the site is successful without having to select the cert each time). This is all good.

I’ve been hosting Alexandrite as my main web UI for Lemmy because Lemmy’s own UI is a bit too basic for my tastes, but Alexandrite hasn’t been updated in 7 months and is still missing features like setting a default comment sort type. So I have a retired but still very serviceable PC that I intend to use as my first home server. I gave two basic goals in self-hosting: 1. Host family media through Jellyfin, etc. This would include tv, music, and possibly books as well. Many of these will be managed through the Arr apps. 2. Degoogle my phone - I'm beginning by replacing Photos with Immich, but hope to also use Home Assistant, backup other phone data such as messages media, shopping lists, etc. I hope to replace Google storage/backup with Proton Drive.

I'm a beginner in networking things but due to my ISP I can only open a certain range of ports in my router to be accessible from the outside of my network (something like ports 11000-11500).

Disclaimer: This is for folks who are running services on Windows machines and does not have more than one device. I am neither an expert at self hosting nor PowerShell. I curated most of this code by doing a lot of "Google-ing" and testing over the years. Feel free to correct any mistakes I have in the code.

While reading many of the blogs and posts here about self hosting, I notice that self hosters spend a lot of time searching for and migrating between VPS or backup hosting. Being a cheapskate, I have a raspberry pi with a large disk attached and leave it at a relative's house. I'll rsync my backup drive to it nightly. The problem is when something happens, I have to walk them through a reboot or do troubleshooting over the phone or worse, wait until a holiday when we all meet.

I have my own invidious instance, and i want all the new videos from my subscriptions to automatically get added to a playlist. Anyone know how do do this?

I feel that sometimes resolution of sub-domain.duckdns.org and host.sub-domain.duckdns.org fails with empty result or even timeout result. Tested resolution against Google and Cloudfare DNS servers.

I have a spare 3070 GPU, as well as 16GB of Memory and my friend has a spare PSU, this part list has everything else I would need+everything I already have. Is there anything I should tweak or modify or will this build work, I plan to use it as a headless server.

Well I set up my email server thru cloudflare and managed to receive emails directly to my basement server. I could live with this and the various security threats incoming thru my unifi. But one thing is for sure, my wife won't have any of it. She's a total backwards thinking give me windows or I'll jump kind of Gal. So I found that I could run a dockerized Thunderbird instance and I thought ... Wow! I can just login to it from my computer or my phone, Surely this is it! I can have emails backed up from Gmail to my server and just access my server! And you know what? It works! I can access my Gmail on my browser! It's beautiful!.... But then I login through my phone and wow! I can access my Gmail! Thru my phone! Except the interface is the same as my desktop. It's literally a VNC to the server. I can login to it on my desktop and watch the mouse move as I move my finger on my phone! Great party trick, but....the text is microscopic. So is there another way to get IMAP and SMTP interface to Gmail, archiving all emails on my own server? I literally don't want any of my emails to live on a Gmail server, but I want to be able to send receive and search emails I previously passed through Gmail but now live on my server.

Greetings fellow enthusiasts.

I assume most users here have some sort of tech/IT/software background. However, I've seen some comments of people who might not have that background (no problem with that) and I wonder if you are self-hosting anything, how did you decide that you would like to self-host?

I built a system around a 3U chassis, then tried to stuff a GPU in the box and couldn't close the lid. I got a 4U chassis and rebuilt the system, but I still have the 3U and I'm thinking about filling it back out so I have a failover for Proxmox. Is there a GPU I should consider or just stick with the integrated graphics? I'm currently only using the GPU for Steam remote play using pass-though to a Windows VM, but Jellyfin, Frigate, Immich are on my to-do list.

In a few months, I will have the space and infrastructure to join the selfhost community. I'm trying to prepare, as I know it can be challenging, but I somehow ended up with more questions than answers.

I'm finally taking the leap from upgrading from a media drive sitting in my desktop PC to a self-build NAS. The parts are on their way and I have to figure out what to do when they actually arrive.

I'm working on starting up my first home server which I'm trying to make relatively foolproof and easily recoverable. What is some common maintenance people do to avoid dire problems, including those that accumulate over time, and what are ways to recover a server when issues pop up?

I've recently gotten on board with Invidous/Viewtube - and they're both great in their own ways. I like not having the algorithm hide or force new content down my throat, but I'm wondering if there's a way to take this to the next level.

I've heard people having problems with them for web hosting, but I'm not sure if this applies to their VPS as well.

I am setting up a Linux server (probably will be NixOS) where my VM disk files will be stored on top of an NTFS partition. (Yes I know NTFS sucks but it has to be this way.)

I've been using paperless-ngx to consume mail from outlook/hotmail for a while now, but recently had the mail server refuse connections while mail was being processed. (Not sure why, consuming is working now with no changes and no errors besides 'connection refused', while retrieving that mail. Temporary outage I guess?)

Does anyone have a working Vikunja instance sending emails through Gmail? I’ve enabled the mailer options and entered the info but the test_email function times out. I’ve checked all the information and even tried different ports.

After upgrading my internet connection I immediatelly noticed that my HDD tops 40 MB/s and bottlnecking download speed in qbittorrent. Is it possible to use SSD drive as a catch drive for 12 TB HDD so it uses SSD speeds when downloading and moves files to HDD later on? If yes, does it make sense? Anyone using anything simmilar? Would 512 GB be enough or could I benefit from 2TB SSD?

I have a decent 2 bay synology, but want to put all my docker images/ VMs running on a more powerful machine connected to the same LAN. Does it ever make sense to do the for media serving or will involving an extra device add too much complexity vs just serving from the NAS itself. I was hoping to have calibre/home assistant/tube type services, etc. all running off a mini PC with a Ryzen 7 and 64gb ram vs the NAS.

I am running a bare metal Kubernetes cluster on k3s with Kube-VIP and Traefik. This works great for services that use SSL/TLS as Server Name Indication (SNI) can be used to reverse proxy multiple services listening on the same port. Consequently, getting Traefik to route multiple web servers receiving traffic on ports 80 or 443 is not a problem at all. However, I am stuck trying to accomplish the same thing for services that just use TCP or UDP without SSL/TLS since SNI is not included in TCP or UDP traffic.

So, I'm trying to setup self hosted rustdesk. I have it running in a docker container. I have allowed the ports through the firewall. I have setup the same ports forwarded in my router, to the server running rustdesk. I have set the private key on both clients.

Hello, I have had a pool of two hard drives in a mirror pool for some time but the OS got corrupted and I reinstalled the OS. Now I am on Linux Mint and my pool does not appear any more. When I use zpool import it says no pool available to import, I have looked around online and found you can import a zpool by specifying the drives, so I used zpool import -f -d /dev/sda1 -f -d /dev/sdb1 internal I get back my pool

I'm travelling for the moment, and usually I just access my home network with tailscale and it has always worked flawlessly. But the hotel I'm staying at apparently blocks VPN connections, I can't use my regular VPN for work on their network either and I've tried obfuscation,different ports etc. nothing seems to work and it never connects.

I have a php webpage with a search bar that uses php code to search my server for files. It's really slow. It's a custom made thing I came up with years ago.

I had self-hosted services on a Raspberry Pi using Docker in my college room. Since I couldn't set up port forwarding, I couldn't enable HTTPS for them. I know that I can still have https without port forwarding but it is not straightforward and difficult for me. And, I used cloudflare tunnel to access them from outside my college network. When I access them using cloudflare tunnel, it uses HTTPS. However, I found conflicting information online about the connection between the server and cloudflare, with some sources saying it's HTTP and others saying it's HTTPS. What's true?

Say I have a large txt or CSV file with data I want to search. And say I have several files.

Basically every local service is accessed via a web interface, and every interface wants a username and password. Assuming none of these services are exposed to the internet, how much effort do you put into security here? Personally, I didn't really think about it when I started. I make a half-assed effort at security where I don't use "admin" or anything obvious as the username, and I use a decent-but-not-industrial password - but I started reusing the u/p as the number of services I'm running grew. I have my browsers remember the u/ps. Should one go farther than this? And if so, what's the threat model? Is there an easier way?

Hey all, Overall problem statement: I'm looking for a small device (SBC if available) that I can use as a tail scale access point for travel and I'm hoping someone has done something similar. Basically I would like to have something small enough that I can toss in my travel bag that I can hook into a hotel network and have access to my home services (mainly jellyfin) on my kindle/work laptop. Not all of my devices support VPN or tailscale and having them already on a known network with built in VPN makes it 10x easier to deal with when traveling (login into hotel WiFi with a kindle Paperwhite sucks!) Ideally it would have dual gig Ethernet and built in WiFi. If this works out well enough I would like to give a few of these to the family so they can access things as well, so cost is a bit important.

Beginner question: Searching for my first dedicated server setup, and I have no idea what to look for in a hard drive. I see a huge difference between drives of the same capacity, so what makes the difference? I am looking to eventually have a media server that can run "-arr" programs, Jellyfin, Immich, sync music, books, etc.

Hello, it's me again. I read a lot about how unreliable micro SD cards are if you use your RPi to selfhost some stuff. Now I wanted to ask if some of you might have recommendations for cheap but reliable external SSDs. I did some research on Amazon but there are some brands I never heard before (Intenso, SSK, Netac, etc.) and don't know if they can be trusted.

It's a bad title, but I'm trying to figure out how to describe what I want.

Not sure if there's a pre-existing solution to this, so I figured I'd just ask to save myself some trouble. I'm running out of space in my Gmail account and switching email providers isn't something I'm interested in. I don't want to pay for Google Drive and I already self-host a ton of other things, so I'm wondering if there is a way to basically offload the storage for the account.

I will soon set up a new home server and need your opinion and experiences.
